The mission of Atlanta Philosophical Services is to use philosophical skills to improve the world. Philosophers vary in their areas of expertise ethics, political philosophy, logic, epistemology, metaphysics, and aesthetics. Philosophers are not psychological counselors, gurus, psychics, or prophets. What philosophers have in common is an ability to analyze, compare, criticize, evaluate, create and defend points of view. Most philosophers are content to teach, publish their theories, and die. They know that philosophical ideas take years to be implemented. For example, Aquinas ideas of civil disobedience (circa 1250) werent implemented until Gandhi and Martin Luther King in the 1960s. Lockes suggestion for three governmental branches (circa 1650) wasnt implemented until used by Jefferson in 1784. Of course some thinkers have sought to implement their ideas in their own lifetime, such as Jesus, Marx, and Dewey, but most philosophers are not social activists. Atlanta Philosophical Services seeks to put philosophical skills to use right now, without expressing any particular philosophical point of view. With that in mind, Atlanta Philosophical Services has two primary functions:1. Publishing philosophical manuscripts that have immediate practical application. 2. Philosophical consulting for individuals, groups, and organizations.
